Mission Statement

The Brooklyn School initiative, in its third year, is a non-sectarian education center that is part of the growing international Waldorf School movement. In our dedication to the principles of Waldorf education, we strive to provide an educational experience that meets the needs of the whole child in an age-appropriate manner. We are committed to building a school whose student body, faculty, staff, and curriculum reflect the economic, cultural and racial diversity of Brooklyn, New York. We are also committed to acting as a resource for the greater Brooklyn community by hosting festival celebrations and ongoing parent and community education. The Brooklyn School is a “developing status” member of the Association of Waldorf Schools of North America.

Admissions Overview

The Brooklyn School looks forward to becoming acquainted with you and assisting you throughout the application process. Deciding on a school for your child is an important and difficult choice and we encourage you to ask questions, review literature, visit and meet with current students, parents, administrators, faculty members and Waldorf school alums.

Just as it is important for you to familiarize yourself with Waldorf education and The Brooklyn School, it is just as important for us to learn about your family and what you are looking for in a school.

How To Apply

Below is an outline of the steps involved in the admissions process as well as a list of items (1-6) required as part of your application to The Brooklyn School. Your application for admission must contain all of these required documents (including the grade-appropriate supplemental form(s) as noted) along with your deposit in order to be considered.

Required Documents

2008-2009 tuition levels will be available after January 2008 on our website or by calling our admissions office. Use this link to download a pamphlet explaining our unique three tier tuition model. Required financial documents for families applying to either Tier 1 or 2 are listed in this pamphlet. Applications without financial documents are not complete without them and will not be processed.

If you sent in an application prior to January and indicated you wished to be considered for either tier one or two, the admissions office will contact you with the 2008-2009 tuition levels asking which you would like to be considered for.

Once your application has been processed, your financial forms received (if applicable) and your chosen tuition tier approved, you will be contacted by the school if 1) there is a question regarding your application, and/or 2) the Administrative-Admissions committee is ready to schedule the final steps of the admission process, which include:

  • 6. A day for your child to visit the classroom*
  • 7. Interview with class teacher*

*This process may vary slightly based on the program and/or the lead teacher’s preference.
